Winnebago County Community Gardens

A community for gardeners across Winnebago County to share knowledge, seeds, and grow food together.

:seedling: Welcome to the WCCGardens Community!

We’re so glad you joined us.

This community is part of Winnebago County Community Gardens, a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating community, sustainability, and food security by helping people grow their own food and share knowledge with one another.

Our goal is to create a space where gardeners across Winnebago County and the surrounding region can connect, ask questions, share experiences, and learn from one another. Whether you’re growing a large backyard garden, a few herbs on a balcony, or volunteering at a community garden — you’re welcome here.

:herb: How This Community Works

This platform has two main ways to participate: Categories and Chat.

Categories

Categories are where longer discussions live and where knowledge is organized so it can be easily found later.

Examples include:

  • Introductions – tell us about yourself and what you’re growing
  • Garden Chat – general gardening conversations
  • Plant Questions – troubleshooting plants and garden issues
  • Pest & Disease Help – identifying pests and plant diseases
  • Soil & Compost – soil health and composting tips
  • Seed Library – discussions related to our seed programs
  • Volunteer Opportunities – ways to get involved with WCCGardens

Topics posted in categories become part of our shared gardening knowledge base, helping future gardeners learn from the community.

Chat

Chat channels are for quick conversations and real-time interaction.

You can use chat for:

  • quick gardening questions
  • sharing photos of your garden
  • casual conversations with other gardeners
  • coordinating seed swaps or volunteer activities

Sometimes conversations that begin in chat may later become full posts so they can help others in the future.

:globe_showing_americas: Why We Built Our Own Community Platform

You might be wondering why we didn’t use platforms like Facebook groups, Reddit, or Discord.

While those platforms are popular, they come with limitations:

  • Information is often difficult to find later
  • Conversations get buried in feeds or chat logs
  • Communities depend entirely on third-party platforms

Instead, we chose to build a platform we host and control ourselves.

This allows us to:

• Preserve valuable gardening knowledge shared by the community
• Keep discussions organized and searchable
• Ensure the community’s data belongs to the community
• Build a lasting knowledge base for gardeners in our region

Over time, this space will become a library of local gardening knowledge specific to our climate, soil, and growing conditions.

Thank you for being part of the WCCGardens Community.
Together we’re growing something bigger than a garden.
